Winter: rodents move in, overwinterers are already there
Cold weather pushes rodents toward the warmth and shelter a house offers, and in rowhome blocks with shared attics and utility chases, one unit's activity can spread to several neighbors over the season. Meanwhile, stink bugs, ladybugs, and boxelder bugs that got inside during fall are typically already dormant in wall voids and attics by winter — the goal at this point is removal (vacuum, don't crush them, since stink bugs release an odor when disturbed), not treatment, since spraying indoors for insects that are already inactive doesn't address anything.
This is also why a house can seem "bug-free" all December and then suddenly have stink bugs wandering across a windowsill on an unusually warm January afternoon. The insects didn't just arrive — they've been dormant in a wall void or attic space since fall, and a stretch of warmer temperatures is enough to briefly wake them up and send them looking for light, which usually means your windows. Sealing the entry points they used in fall is a better long-term fix than repeatedly vacuuming up whatever wakes up on a given warm day.
Spring: termite swarms and the season's first ants

This is also when carpenter ants and other early-season ant species become active as soil temperatures warm, foraging for food sources near foundations and kitchens. A perimeter treatment done before ant trails are established tends to prevent the problem rather than interrupt one already underway.
Not every spring ant is the same kind of problem. Odorous house ants and pavement ants are a nuisance that follows food and water, but carpenter ants are structurally relevant — they excavate wood to nest in it, rather than eat it the way termites do, which means seeing large black ants (often a third of an inch or longer) near a windowsill or door frame is worth a closer look, not just a wipe-down. The excavated wood carpenter ants leave behind has a smooth, sanded appearance rather than the mud-packed tunnels termites leave, which is one way to tell the two apart before a professional confirms it.
Late spring into summer: ticks, mosquitoes, and stinging insects
Tick activity in Maryland typically runs April through September, with the highest disease risk in late spring and early summer when the nymph stage is active and small enough to go unnoticed. Anyone with pets or a yard bordering woods or tall grass should treat this window seriously, not just as a summer afterthought. Ticks can't jump or fly — they wait on the tips of grass and low shrubs and latch onto whatever brushes past, which means keeping grass mowed short, clearing leaf litter, and creating a mulch or gravel barrier between lawn and wooded edges meaningfully reduces the number of ticks that make it onto a person or pet in the first place.
Mosquito season ramps up through early summer and peaks in July and August. The Maryland Department of Agriculture's Mosquito Control Program runs larviciding and surveillance across the state during this window, which helps with area-wide pressure, but it doesn't address breeding sites on an individual property. Standing water in gutters, planters, or anywhere else on your own lot is a homeowner-level problem the state program isn't built to solve, and it's usually the single biggest factor in how bad mosquito activity gets on a specific property. The most common sources worth checking every week or so:
- Clogged gutters holding water after rain
- Birdbaths, plant saucers, and kiddie pools left standing between uses
- Old tires, tarps, or buckets that collect rainwater in a yard or alley
- Low spots in a yard that puddle and don't drain within a day or two
Wasps and hornets also begin building nests in late spring, and a nest caught early — while it's still small and the colony hasn't grown — is a far simpler removal than one that's been left through a full summer. Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves and are relatively less aggressive unless the nest itself is disturbed; yellowjackets nest in the ground or in wall voids and are considerably more defensive, especially later in the season when colony numbers peak. Identifying which one you're dealing with changes how urgently it needs to be handled, and by whom.
Fall: rodents again, plus the indoor-seeking invaders
As temperatures drop, rodent pressure builds again for the same reason it does in early winter: warmth and shelter indoors beat the alternative outside. This is also when stink bugs and boxelder bugs actively look for gaps to get inside for the winter, which is why sealing exterior gaps in early fall, before the search for entry points ramps up, is more effective than dealing with them once they've already gotten in. These insects are drawn to sun-warmed, south- and west-facing walls in particular, so that's where gaps around siding, utility penetrations, and window frames are worth checking first.
Spiders also become more visible in fall as males wander in search of mates, which is often mistaken for a sudden "spider problem" when it's really just a seasonal uptick in visibility rather than a change in population.

A seasonal treatment plan works best when visits are timed to land ahead of each activity window rather than on a fixed schedule that ignores it. In practice, the cost and disruption of solving an established problem — a termite colony that's had years to mature, a rodent infestation that's spread across a block, a wasp nest that's grown all summer — is consistently higher than the cost of a seasonal treatment scheduled ahead of the activity. Reactive treatment solves what's already visible; proactive treatment addresses the conditions before they become visible in the first place, which is the difference between a routine service call and an emergency one.
